Aragon is an ancient land composed of three provinces: Zaragoza; remote Teruel, which is farther south and Huesca; Most of Aragon constitutes terra incognita for the average tourist- which is unfortunate, since it is one of the most historic regions of Spain.
Politically and Historically Aragon has close links with Catalonia, with which it formed a powerful alliance in medieval times, exerting influence over the Mediterranean as far away as Athens.
Aragon is a Castilian rather than Catalan speaking area though and, locked in on all sides by mountains, has always had its own identity, with traditional fueros like the Basques.
