Martyrs Monument

This Martyrs of Religion and of the Country Monument has been located in the plaza de España since 1904, in replacement of the Neptune Fountain, which had lost its function with the arrival of running water. The aim of the new monument was to perpetuate the memory of the Innumerable Martyrs and Aragonese defenders, who lost their lives during the Peninsula War sieges. Thus the traditional symbology o the place was recovered: here the Cross of the Coso, in memory of the martyred Christians, was found until its destruction during the Siege.

The architectonic part is designed by Ricardo Magdalena and the sculptures were carried out by Agustin Querol. The main theme is an angel that sustains a wounded Aragonese person whilst signalling to the sky; behind the group, a cross evokes the aforementioned Cross of the Coso. On the lower part of the pedestal there is a figure of a matron –symbol of Zaragoza and the city shield.
