The Spanish-French Exhibition was held in Zaragoza in 1908, in memory of the Peninsula War and to unite both countries. For this event with more than 5,000 exhibitors, a site was prepared between Avenida Independencia and Huerva River. This is now Plaza de los Sitios, which contains striking buildings such as the Museo de Zaragoza. In the middle of the square stands the Monument to the Sieges, by Agustin Querol. The official inauguration of the monument was presided by the Alfonso XIII and his wife, Queen Victoria Eugenia, in 1908.
It is, undoubtedly, the most complete and beautiful public sculpture of the city: the architecture of the pedestal and the figures merge into a unit of great visual impact full of refinement. The modernist style is obvious in the fluidity of the shapes and the use of materials and different techniques, from relief to free sculpture. The characters represented ate the most unique defenders of the Siege, highlighting the group of heroines towing a canon. The monument is crowned with the allegory of Zaragoza, represented by a female figure resting on the city shield.
