Home » Church of the Magdalena
It was erected at the start of the 14th century to replace a previous Romanesque temple. Its typology corresponds to the model of a single-nave church, with chapels between the buttresses and polygonal sanctuary. The temple changes its orientation during the 18th century reform, the new access door being placed in the old apse sanctuary. The original door with archivolts has been blocked up on the southern side, in the Mayor Street.
The outside of the apse is decorated with interlaced mixtilinear arches under pointed windows and above these, crosses with multiple arms forming rhombic shapes. The tower follows the models of the towers of San Martin and El Salvador in Teruel; their structure also responds to the model of Almohade minaret, like in San Pablo. The ornamental motifs are traditional in Aragonese Mudejar architectre, enriched in this case with pieces of glazed earthenware.
On the inside the sculptural unit of the High Altarpiece stands out and the images situated in the nave, by Jose Ramirez de Arellano (18th century), author of the sculpture of the Holy Chapel of the Pilar. The church possessed an altarpiece by Damian Forment, which today is preserved in pieces in two chapels of the temple.
