  • Ayerbe

Ayerbe was an important centre, especially at the Middle Ages, because of its location in the way to the Pyrenees. Although it was a fortified town, only the Arab castle ruins remain. Walking around the streets of its old quarter recalls the past, something that is a real pleasure. Likewise, it is also a real pleasure to taste its fantastic confectionery, the bread and sponge cakes, as well as buying any of its leather handicrafts. The patron saint’s days, in honour of Saint Leticia, are on 8th to 11th September. Among its traditions, it can be highlighted the procession to the Saint Miguel chapel, which traces its origins to the 12th century. 9.3 miles from this town, there is a natural enclave of spectacular beauty: Mallos de Riglos, which are 1940 feet above sea level and have an area of 24.6 square miles. The Nobel Prize in Medicine Ramon y Cajal settled in Ayerbe in 1860.
