Monzon is the capital of the Cinca Medio comarca (roughly equivalent to a US "county" or an English district). This territory has been traditionally a land to pass through, which has produced remarkable artistic and cultural diversity. Besides, lying by the River Cinca, its exploitation has marked the lives and times of many generations along its banks. The Roman heritage, still palpable in different remains, the permanent Moorish influence in toponomy and in the way the peasants work the land, the shadow of the knight Templars, floating upon the Castle of Monzon and its surroundings.

King James I "The Conqueror" was kept under guardianship by the Knights Templar in Monzon. Monzon was the birthplace of Joaquin Costa, One of the greatest men of the ‘’Regeneracionismo’’. He developed theories about education, water management and agricultural politics that were followed throughout the 20th century. "Oligarquía y Caciquismo" is one of his best books.
