Garden at Casa de San Martin
Casa de San Martin is a lovingly restored old stone farmhouse, a retreat that manages to be chic and rustic. It is situated in the province of Huesca in the heart of the Pyrenees, on the edge of the Ordesa-Monte Perdido National Park. This property has been transformed as an elegant bed and breakfast and it dates back over 1,000 years having once belonged to the Abbot of San Victorian, the oldest monastery in Spain.
All your senses are awakened at San Martin de Solana from the sound of birdsong and cowbells chiming to the warm scents of lavender and clean mountain air. It is completely secluded and accessed only via a 5km dirt track, the nearest towns are Boltaña and Ainsa. The hosts, the Brazilian Mario Reis and English David Robinson make you feel like friends rather than guests.
Rooms are really characterful and the bathrooms sublime. The bedrooms of the Casa de San Martin are nicely furnished and decorated in a rustic way. They all boast colourful walls and wooden furniture. The extra touches like the piped music that plays was also excellent. You also have a couple of honesty bars around the casa and a variety of places to sit and admire the extraordinary views whilst tucking into a good book.
It seems, the proud character of the old house is trying to draw your attention to its long history in many ways. Solid wooden beams hold the ceilings, unplastered stone walls and wrought-iron bedsteads create a cosy and distinctive atmosphere. And, at a closer look there is a whole lot of little touching details that help creating a particularly pleasant environment. You won’t, however, find a TV set throughout the whole house. For it would be a shame to waste one’s time with it.
Food & Drink: The casa offers lovely food (Hotel guests only), we recommend you to spoil yourself to the 4 course set menus, just before retiring to the terrace amongst the candles and oil burners to have a night cap and watch the shooting stars. The Casa provides an ample breakfast. Using produce from the own Hotel vegetable gardens the chef prepares the freshest of ingredients for use in his inventive menus, with special emphasis on promoting local dishes and Somontano wines. Under personal direction, Casa de San Martin creative cuisine offers a different menu daily and can cater for any special dietary requirements (Vegetarian meals ...) if discussed at the time of reservation.
Surroundings: Casa de San Martin is situated in a privileged environment, bordered by the Ordesa National Park. Built upon a high plateau, some 890 metres above sea level, it lies in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees in approximately 92 hectares or beautiful stepped hillside and forest. The coniferous vegetation and abandoned villages make for spectacular views from the mountain above to the valley below.
Adventure Sports: The Aragon Pyrenees provide endless opportunities for recreation and excitement. Lots and lots of places for excursions like picturesque mountain villages, hermit huts, mountain lakes and monumental trees could keep you busy for weeks and months. The more adventurous can go for all kinds of mountain sports: mountaineering, rock climbing, wild water rafting and paragliding. During winter you can go skiing (at 20 Min. drive from the hotel). Approximately 40 miles from some of the Pyrenees top skiing resorts.
