Hotel Castillo de Ayud is a lovingly restored Belle Epoque luxury country house, a retreat that manages to be chic and rustic. The Hotel was built originally by the Aragonese family Sanchez Cuenca in the 1920s and was known as Chalet de los Sanchez .
The old building has been lovingly restored and converted into a charming hotel, sparing no expense and with meticulous attention to detail.
Hotel offers 7 charming rooms, all spacious and equipped with air conditioning, heating, balcony (subject to availability), hair-dryer, ensuite bathroom, telephone, flat screen TV, minibar, in-room safe, wireless internet access, writing desk and room service.
Guests have use of some of the facilities in the modern, innovative 3-star hotel next door. The old restored building and the new building are connected by a gallery in the basement floor, where you also find the spa area, winery and wine tasting hall and shops with local products.
Using the produce from the local farms the chef prepares the freshest of ingredients for use in his inventive menus, with special emphasis on promoting Aragonese dishes and Calatayud wines. Hotel Castillo de Ayud provides an ample buffet breakfast.
The Romans founded Bilbilis (nowadays Calatayud) and abandoned it in the 2nd century. By the 8th century it was re-populated by the arrival of the Muslims. The Moors were routed here in 1120 by the conquering Catholic forces. Some of the Moorish influence can still be seen in the town.
Calatayud has a collegiate church - Santa Maria la Mayor- the churches of San Andres, San Pedro and San Martin, the arch of Furiega and the ruins of a castle. In the church of San Juan el Real you can visit the four Goya paintings of the Parents of the Church. Embedded in the hillside are tiny homes of peasant proportions. It is an easy walk to the top where you can explore the narrow alleyways and gain unbelievable views.
The Piedra Monastery is 25 km away and is the most visited private Nature Reserve in Europe. The AVE (Spanish high-speed train) links Calatuyud to Zaragoza (30 minutes), Madrid (1 hour) and Barcelona (2 hours).
